![]() One of the things I am involved in at our Church is a project called 'Martha's kitchen' which is set up to give a good meal and shelter (for an hour or so!) to people who are in need (homeless etc). We get between 30 - 40 turning up week by week and have a right old mix of people from your traditional homeless sorts to younger people who have been thrown out of/or left home. About 50% of the group are Eastern European as where we live we have serious numbers of people who work on the farms etc. We have taken the view that as 'we' opened the doors to everyoine in Europe, they have a right to be here and therefore if they are in need, they need support as anyone does. Much of the time work is there for these guys but as soon as demand drops so do thier jobs. Some are in really desperate situations... When I was down at the project this Thursday, I eneded up packing stuff away at the end of the evening and as I did I had to go to different parts of our building. I observed the following groups:
My second thought was how interesting it is that diferent things ring different people's bells: I have no doubt that I were to ask thew 'worshippers' what the most important thing is they would say 'worship', the prayers would say 'praying' the dancers would say 'dancing' and I, absolutely convinced by my interpretation of what God sees as essential for us to be involved with as Christians would be 'feeding the hungry'. Despite my deeply held views (!), am I right that my are is more important? are we all right? is it each to his own? will I ever be as passionate about prayer/worship as I am working with the poor? should I be? For me, I have pondered over recent months about what is priority - working on the basis that, with the precious time I have spare in a week, I can't do the lot and I came to the conclusion that my view is these things are important as I read the Bible and learn more about God. These are the things that it says (somewhere in scripture) are a 'test' of true religion (kingdom principles):
I then took these areas on a bit of paper and 'mappoed' what I was doing against these areas and found, to my surprise, I had stuff under most area. I was encouraged by this as the myth I ofetn live under (as I think many Christian do) is that we are 'not doing well enough' as Christians. Comments...views...?? 1 Comment | About the blogger:
Dave started blogging when, as a family, we went to live in India for 3.5 months in '08. You'll find out all about that story by going to our old blog here.
Dave overdid it a bit on the old blog in India with posts going up most days, so since returning to the UK, he has taken a bit of a break but feels now it's time to blog again! (July '09). Blogging is a weird thing and a bit voyeristic at times (!) so why do it? Surely life blogging in the UK will never be as exciting for people as it was in India? Well, the main reason for beginning to blog again is that we are pretty naff at the normal kind of communication! We have a number of good friends that do not live in the UK too and this is just one way we feel we can touch base with them. Feedback is that they are happy (ish) with that too! The final good reason for starting again is that the one person who has hassled me back to blogging is my older brother in China who runs a great blog about his bizzare life in China which you can view here. I guess if I am honest it's him I have in my mind when I blog so, for his sake (as I know he will read it!), if for no one elses...here goes.... Dave ;-) Categories:All ArchivesJanuary 2012 Life mantra:
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away." One of the last notes left behind by Gandhi in 1948, expressing his deepest social thought. |
