You'll be aware from the blog below that the jury is still out on whether I continue to blog. Many thanks to the bulk of you that have voted so far.

I jumped on the site today just to see how many had voted and saw 2 comments on the 'it depends' vote button so I checked out the comments. One was from my Dad encouraging me to 'keep going' and the other was from someone who (surprise surprise) has not left his name. His/her comments were as follows:

'If you keep on promoting false teachers like Rob Bell then I would prefer it if you stop blogging. It's a big, big responsibility when you put yourself forward as a 'teacher' [which is what you do when you blog about spiritual issues] and the Bible makes clear that those who want to be teachers will receive a higher standard of judgment. [James 3 v 1] You are promoting a man who, without putting too fine a point on it, teaches false doctrine. You should leave these responsibilities to those called to the ministry'.

There is a part of me that read this and couldn't even be bothered to respond and part of me (the part that won!) decided that people like this really need to be exposed hence me going live with these comments.

So, whoever you are, lets have it out! What ever your views on Rob Bell are, having sat and listened to the guy (something I doubt you have?) I been helped no end by his teaching. People have strong views on Rob (as you have exhibited) but for many thousands of sound, solid Christians he is a breath of fresh air and far from a heritic.

Whether you agree with his teaching or not maybe we all need to reflect on 2 things:

1. I seem to recall Jesus was called a hereitic by the pharisees of the time and crucified for it. Rob not's the first 'heretic' so called

2. I seem to recall the Bible has more to say about Christians judging others than a lot of other stuff. Take note!

Most bizzare of all is this anonumous persons quote that I have set myself up as 'a teacher that should leave teaching to those called to the ministry'. All because I blog?? Really?? Get real pal!

There that's that off my chest. I hope this person is no one I know or a friendship may just have been lost!!

Oh how I have struggled with faith of late and you want to know part of the reason? Views like I read today. What did criticism and judgement ever do for anyone eh?

    About the blogger:

    Picture
Dave started blogging when, as a family, we went to live in India for 3.5 months in '08. You'll find out all about that story by going to our old blog here.

Dave overdid it a bit on the old blog in India with posts going up most days, so since returning to the UK, he has taken a bit of a break but feels now it's time to blog again! (July '09).

Blogging is a weird thing and a bit voyeristic at times (!) so why do it? Surely life blogging in the UK will never be as exciting for people as it was in India?

Well, the main reason for beginning to blog again is that we are pretty naff at the normal kind of communication! We have a number of good friends that do not live in the UK too and this is just one way we feel we can touch base with them. Feedback is that they are happy (ish) with that too!

The final good reason for starting again is that the one person who has hassled me back to blogging is my older brother in China who runs a great blog about his bizzare life in China which you can view here.

I guess if I am honest it's him I have in my mind when I blog so, for his sake (as I know he will read it!), if for no one elses...here goes....

    Dave ;-)

    Life mantra:

    Picture

"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions?

Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away."

One of the last notes left behind by Gandhi in 1948, expressing his deepest social thought.
