Legacy: 24/09/2011
Legacy. it's been on my mind recently. 3 reasons: 1. I have been reading a book by one of my favourite authors Stephen Covey called 'the 8th Habit.' This book talks about finding your 'voice' - that which is unique to you, the reason you are on planet earth. Your purpose for being here. Covey also inspires me to look at the legacy that your voice can leave. The 'finding of your unique voice' is something which, for me, is an ever evolving journey. Who I was and what my voice was 10 years is different to now. As I grow and develop, know & understand more, so the sense of the voice I have grows. Not louder necessarily but in confidence I guess. 2. There was the wonderful time we had with my Granddad last week on his 100th. If that doesn't wake you up to legacy I don't think anything will! 3. Finally I was reminded too of legacy yesterday when 3 staff from the SHYPP project I set up 10 years ago had their leaving do's. 2 of those people had been at SHYPP for 10 and 8 years respectively. One of them, a colleague who started the organisation with me back in 2001 had faithfully served the young people in SHYPP for 10 years and was now leaving. During the farewells that took place during the day it struck me again of the legacy that she is leaving. She hasn't just done a job for 10 years but invested in staff and young people day on day, year on year and leaves a lasting legacy in people's lives. Now that's worth getting up in the morning for!! You know as well as I do this doesn't happen every day of the week in every job in the Country so i, for one, stand blessed today to be working alongside people in a role where we are leaving legacy. What's your legacy going to be? Add Comment 100: 20/09/2011
Today I celebrate my Granddad. For many reasons, he is a bit of a hero of mine - and others too!. The stand he took in the war (as an objector), his example of loving your wife through good times and not so good, his constant 'pointing people to Jesus' etc means, for me, he really is one in a million. Before all the celebrations happened today we shot down to London at the weekend to see Granddad and spend a few (quieter) moments with him before everyone else arrived. It was a very very precious time where I was able to say some of the things I wanted to say to him. Who knows if I will be able to say them again - as we don't get to see him as often as we would like. Granddad cannot wait to 'get home' to see Dulcie (his wife) and 'Father'. If I'm selfish, I hope he goes on inspiring me, and others, for many years to come but all I can really pray for is what he wants: to go 'home'. Love you Grandad x Genius: 16/09/2011
Just take two minutes to view this and see what a simple idea can do. I've resolved to try and have a simple thought today. One that changes someone's life. Will you?? 9/11 11/09/2011

I'm not going to add anything to this article as it's self explanatory. Please take a moment to read and act. I have. This kind of thing is such a sad reflection of society today. If we want to keep 'reaping what we sow' then lets just keep on allowing this stuff. If not, act, like I have. Don't sit on the fence please! Web: 10/09/2011
I am a classic resource investigator. I love finding out, getting, gathering and researching. I love, therefore, the web! For me and other RI's it's an endless pot of knowledge and gives answers to all that we want to know. I know it has it's dangers but it's strengths far outweigh those I reckon. The web never ceases to come up trumps for me! The amount of times I have popped my question into Google and it has returned pots of responses that, 9 times out of 10 are bang on what I need. As much as I love the web in general there are a few sites that I return to time and time again. I think most people are a little like that from what I hear. I obviously use online e mail and Facebook etc but two others that I use a lot are Lifehacker and Stumbleupon. Lifehacker describes itself as a site that gives 'Tips, tricks, and downloads for getting things done'. It is rammed with ideas on 'how to do', what to do', 'how to live life', 'how to fix stuff etc'. Have a look. You can subscribe to get copies of thier daily posts or just dip into it when you have time. Stumbleupon is different. You register for free, log in and then select what your interests are - anything from philosophy to religion to tech stuff to food etc etc. Then you just keep clicking the 'stumbleupon' button and the site will scour the web for you in second as and randomly pick sites for you to look at. If you tick the 'bizzare' or 'funny' boxes you get all sorts of hilarious stuff! If you'd love to know what the web has to offer but haven't got the time to trawl through to find the good stuff, Stumbleupon does it for me! Pics: 10/09/2011
At long last, here are the pictures we had taken by Tabby at Grosmont Castle for my brothers wedding Run: 09/09/2011
I've mentioned before that I have entered the Cardiff Half Marathon. It takes place on 16th October 2011 and I really do need to step up the distances to get there! Tonight was a bit of a (psychological) breakthrough for me... I'd been struggling over recent weeks with motivation etc and recently Albert (the guy who got me in on my first half) started to run once a week with me to give me a bit of kick. It's so much easier with someone with you. Chatting away, if nothing else, makes the time and distance go so much quick. Having him alongside, I've been able to gte back into what we call 10:1's: 10 minutes to run a mile and then walk a minute. A half marathon is 13 miles and, by the end of this month, I really want to be at 10 miles. Well tonight I got half way - 6 miles. See here. Nothing great there as I will often do a 8 mile run but this time it was the distance I did in the time. 6 miles in 60 minutes is good for me and that's what I did tonight. If I can keep going at that pace should do the half in 2.5 hours which, for a chunky munky like me is pretty good!! Between now and the end of the month is the biggie. Got to get to 10. Once you get to 10 (they say) then a half is a breeze. All a long way from how things ended up at my 1st and last half!! The riots were no laughing matter but working on the basis that you have to see the lighter side of life, I got sent this today and thought you might like a laugh!! | About the blogger:
Dave started blogging when, as a family, we went to live in India for 3.5 months in '08. You'll find out all about that story by going to our old blog here.
Dave overdid it a bit on the old blog in India with posts going up most days, so since returning to the UK, he has taken a bit of a break but feels now it's time to blog again! (July '09). Blogging is a weird thing and a bit voyeristic at times (!) so why do it? Surely life blogging in the UK will never be as exciting for people as it was in India? Well, the main reason for beginning to blog again is that we are pretty naff at the normal kind of communication! We have a number of good friends that do not live in the UK too and this is just one way we feel we can touch base with them. Feedback is that they are happy (ish) with that too! The final good reason for starting again is that the one person who has hassled me back to blogging is my older brother in China who runs a great blog about his bizzare life in China which you can view here. I guess if I am honest it's him I have in my mind when I blog so, for his sake (as I know he will read it!), if for no one elses...here goes.... Dave ;-) Categories:All ArchivesJanuary 2012 Life mantra:
"I will give you a talisman. Whenever you are in doubt, or when the self becomes too much with you, apply the following test. Recall the face of the poorest and the weakest man [woman] whom you may have seen, and ask yourself, if the step you contemplate is going to be of any use to him [her]. Will he [she] gain anything by it? Will it restore him [her] to a control over his [her] own life and destiny? In other words, will it lead to swaraj [freedom] for the hungry and spiritually starving millions? Then you will find your doubts and your self melt away." One of the last notes left behind by Gandhi in 1948, expressing his deepest social thought. |
